There's a new world record for fastest production car again.

Last Saturday , the North American SSC Tuatara became the new world record holder for fastest production car, reaching an average speed of 316 mph over two runs in both directions down a seven-mile stretch of highway outside of Las Vegas. Considering that it costs 1.9 million dollars and they’re only building 100 of them, I know some of you probably won’t care a whole lot about this, but look at it this way: Whenever somebody starts talking about Bugatti , you can once again tell them that they no longer make the world’s fastest cars.   Also, I think it’s worth mentioning that this thing is a heckuva lot prettier than a Bugatti, and only weighs 2,750 lbs, so it’s not a fat pig of a supercar like the Bugatti. Even though it’s kinda pointless, I just like that it exists.

Did it run it on the stock tire though? Street legal.

The fastest car is names after a turtle, while a slow-ass minicar (Chevy Sprint) and a fucking van (Dodge/Freightliner/ Mercedes Sprinter) are named after runners lol

I’m very critical of SSC. The Aero was a dangerous, wheelspinny, ugly kit car thing, and the Tuatara was promised to us almost a decade ago. At times they feel like that other American supercar company that’s more vaporware and lies than actual achievements.

But this is still pretty damn cool. I’d like to see Koenigsegg take the crown, but SSC have done it. In new money this is the first road car to go past 500 km/hr - it doesn’t feel like all that long ago that the Veyron crossed 400. Amazing

love that they are out of Richland, WA - some of that Hanford nuke plant radiation must have rubbed off on the car for that extra little kick

Agreed and can point out its American company SSC and renowned American engine company Nelson Racing.

Tuataras are not turtles (or tortoises ). They are reptiles but not lizards despite having similar appearance . But they are slow like tortoises .

Shoot, I’d looked through past Oppo posts to see if anyone had posted about it yet and didn’t see any. Guess I missed that one.

SSC was very adamant in their video and press release that they tried to make this car as safe as possible, and that they took the potential consequences of wiping out at 300 mph very seriously, so at least there’s that. It definitely seems like they’ve been working hard on this thing since they promised it ten years ago, and all that work did not go to waste. Building the first production car to officially  break the 300 mph+ barrier is no small achievement...

Yep, the tires have to be road legal in order for it to be an official world record. This car used Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

Nbd, this is a pretty cool video/accomplishment that I’m sure quite a few people missed.

Yeah, when I first saw the announcement, I felt like it just came out of nowhere. Like, I didn’t even remember this company existed, and now they’re in the record books!? And with a car that looks and probably handles a lot better than the supposed 300 mph Bugatti! So I thought I’d post in case other Oppos missed it.

That’s good, it sounds right. I haven’t seen the video yet (I’m mad keen though!) but I’d like to see that they’ve built a thorough, proper supercar, rather than a sketchy shell with a 1300hp LS.

I reme mber reading of the Aero that it has no ABS or TCS :

...with test driver Rick Doria reporting wheelspin at speeds above 300 km/h

I think they said it was part of the design philosophy of the car, to be a pure driver’s car with no unnecessary aids. But when you’ve got that much power, lacking them entirely feels lazy rather than pure. 900hp without traction control isn’t a good idea.

I read what the driver of the Tuatara had to say about the experience, and he seemed to think it was a very controllable car which the average person could drive with a bit of instruction. Also, the engine in the Tuatara is a flat-plane crank V8 built by Nelson Racing Engines, so it’s built by experienced people who know what they’re doing, it’s not just another modded LS engine.

Excellent! It shouldn’t really be a puppy with those specs, but it should be like...driveable.

Oh I didn’t know that. I think the concept was going to have a 7 litre LS, but as you say it looks to have changed. FWIW I don’t think a modded LS is such a bad thing, it seems a very capable engine. But it sounds like they’ve put the right amount of thought in.

meh

the se  will never again hit those speeds.

most will potter around at low speed limits on the way to car shows, if they even leave the garage.

For some people, just knowing that it can is  enough. Like if you were to buy a retired military vehicle, you wouldn’t actually plan on taking it to war. But knowing that you own something that can handle war would be really cool! Obviously, some people will want to take it to war, and those people will likely join the military. And some people will want to drive their supercar at 300 mph, and those people are rich enough to find/rent/buy a place where they can do that. But for the rest of us, knowing is enough. For me, I’m just happy that it exists because I think it’s a cool achievement. I mean, there’s a production car now that can exceed 300 mph! How crazy is that?
